To headline the opening night of The Guilty Party we could not think of anyone more perfect than Lear. In terms of local unsigned bands there is no band that springs to mind that have worked harder over the last seven years than Blackwood favourites Lear. If the world was perfect, by now Lear should be playing venues and nights a lot bigger than this, unfortunately the world is nowhere near perfect. Lear should be on TOTP, CD UK, playing the arenas, playing the festivals, after tonight’s performance we will keep our fingers crossed those days will soon be here. Lear give us real guitar pop music, I’m not talking about pop as in the mcfly sense of the word, I’m talking about the guitar pop that began with The Beatles and in more recent years been used by the likes of Travis and Coldplay. Jackie and Julie, Desperate To Be Different, Sandman, are all songs that should be getting daytime airplay on every radio station. Lear are confident, know how to command a stage, know how to write and perform instantly classic pop songs. With an album due out in February on Javelin records, 2006 has to be the year that all their hard work, commitment and talent finally pay off and sees Lear become the band they deserve to be.
